Law was unsure how to react towards the state you were in. An IV tube ran up the crook of your right arm whilst other tubes hooked to machines stabilized you. You were draped in a customary hospital gown and now lay in a medical bed with a distant gaze fixated on the ceiling.

You did not appear to be the type of person to land yourself in the critical care unit, and yet here you were, the only thing keeping you alive were beeping and whirring of machinery. This was so wrong in Law’s eyes, it was so wrong and odd but he could not wrap his head around the reasoning for his thoughts towards this. He would never deny his concern for your safety, but he did mask it, his impassive, silver gaze fixated on your ill form from the chair he sat in near the bedside. He would not be able to stay long, but this was the least he could do for you. He wished he could do more.

The news of your condition rendered your psyche in a state of confusion, shock and fear and now as it all sank in gradually, you lay limp and silent. You were pale do to the lack of blood in your system; you truly appeared on death’s doorstep. You were so weak that breathing seemed like a challenge, you barely able to muster the strength to inhale. Your arms had been bandaged and the upper part of your abdomen. The massive bruise, a clear give away of your grim condition, had been left well alone, as any attempts of contact with the wound caused severe pain.

Law was the only one who was present and the one who carried you to the hospital as you were unable to walk. Law was also the only one, other than yourself, that knew of the remedy needed to cure your illness; abdominal surgery. The cause of the internal bleeding, according to the physician, was due to a blunt trauma to the abdominal region that further caused a blood vessel to tear a tad but not break. There was one final issue that needed to needed to be clarified; the wound was cleared several days old and yet the bleeding had only occurred today. The answer struck the medical student’s core, as he knew what the cause was. It was the final tug that Law administered when attempting to analyze your wounds that tore the vessel, thus causing the bleeding.

Law felt horrible for what he had done even if it was an accident. Regardless if it was unintentional, he was the end result that finally landed you in this place, this very place where you might die. He should have been more gentle, he should have minded any sort of injury that may have been concealed underneath your shirt. He was careless.

You, to the shock of both Law and the doctors, forgave him. You explained weakly what had occurred prior to the rupture of the vessel, who truly caused these injuries that littered your body. The doctors and nurses recommended, or more like demanded, that you report this to the police, as it was the kick to your stomach that caused the damage. You kept their advice in mind.

There was only a single setback that delayed the operation to save your life; you were refusing the surgery. Law was completely dumbfounded just as much as the physicians. He, along with the doctors, attempted to reason with you in hopes of altering your decision. You, on the other hand, were far too stubborn and continued to outright refuse. Now, you and Law were alone in the room, the doctors having left to attend to any other patients.

The tattooed man stared at you quietly, observing your condition. He could not understand why you would refuse the surgery. He knew it was a frightening decision, but it was the only way to save your life, and yet here you were decline it. Law was determined to keep you alive one way or another, it was his responsibility to do so as he was the end result of this. He will get you onto that surgical table one way or another.

“Shorty – ya,” Law called out after a long period of silence, “You need to undergo surgery, it’s the only way to save your life. You will die, Shorty – ya, die. You’re still very young and your condition is very serious. I understand that you’re scared and that surgery is the last thing you would what to consider, but think about the lives you will impact if you don’t survive. Think about your brother, your friends and those that care about you. You’ll break them if you continue to deny this surgery. So please, just do it.”

You did not respond, remaining silent as you continued to stare blankly upwards. You needed surgery. You needed surgery. Your stomach was going to be cut open to stop the bleeding from a simple kick. A kick caused your blood vessel to rupture and now you needed surgery to save your live. Your eyes, for the first time, broke their gaze from the ceiling and dropped to your stomach.

Your dull eyes flickered with emotion and your hand clenched the white sheet. You weakly shook your head, sighing shakily.

    “I won’t get . . . surgery. No, I won’t do it.” You choked out.

“Why not?” Law demanded, titling his head to the side expectantly, “This surgery can save your life. Why can’t you understand that?”

“I do,” You paused, frowning deeply. You lowered your head, your hair shadowing your eyes as your shoulders shook and tears began to stream down your face, “I just. . . What if something goes wrong? What if there is a complication and they can’t fix the problem? What if they can’t fix the problem at all and it’s too late? I could die during the surgery, die Trafalgar! Something could go horribly wrong. . . There’s just too many possibilities. I don’t want to risk it.”

Law closed his eyes, now understanding your immense hesitation towards the operation. The fears you had listed were common thoughts that crossed one’s mind; the fear and possibility of death or a complication that could arise during the procedure. Law could not laugh at you nor make any snarky remarks towards your fear; you were in a critical condition and it was nothing to laugh about. Your concern was nothing to joke about.

You shifted your body, wincing in discomfort. You were not usually in the hospital nor with such a risky condition. In addition, you did not think the person whom would bring you here would be Law or continue to stay by your side. You had been trapped within this place and restricted to the bed for nearly three hours. David, your brother, had only recently been contacted by the hospital about your ailment and would shortly arrive.

Law leaned forward, opening his eyes as he intertwined his fingers and rested them against the small space between his nose and upper lip, “Shorty – ya, listen to me. I know that you’re scared and you have a right to be, but right now you need to be strong. I know that surgery is a scary thing and the last thing you want to think about, but there are things that you just cannot ignore, and this is one of them. You will be fine.”

    “But what if – ”

Law swiftly cut you off, “Don’t think of the negatives, instead, think of the positives. If the surgery goes smoothly, which it will, you will be healthy and alive. You will stay with your friends and your brother. Isn’t that better than those other thoughts?”

You stared at him, almost pleading to stop trying to convince you to undergo the surgery. You really didn’t want to do it, even if you would be put under anesthetics, the thought of your abdomen being cut open was far too affrighting. You would rather die.

However, Law’s words did begin to sway your judgement.

You broke your gaze with the tanned man, looking up in misery as a frown pulled at your lips. You let out a shaky, hesitant sigh, “Are. . . Are you sure nothing will go wrong?” You felt a hand on your shoulder and squeeze almost in a reassuring manner. You blinked in shock, your head lifting feebly as you stared at Law whose hand remained on your shoulder with a firm, warm grip. Upon seizing your attention, he reached out with the opposite hand and wiped away your tears, as you could not do it yourself.

Law attempted a smile, “You will be fine, I promise. These people are professionals, they’ll make sure you’ll get out of these alive.” His words were nothing but sincere, honest and even a bit sympathetic. You were going to survive this, this was not where the curtain will fall over your life. Death was not an option for you, he would not allow it even if you were his sworn enemy.

Here, he will become your friend, the person whom you could depend on for comfort in times of sorrow and fear. As cliché as that sounded, it was the least he could do, the only thing he could do.

“Will you go through the surgery?” He questioned in a low voice.

You had once again fallen silent, your expression still masked by uncertainty. You bit the inside of your cheek, scanning the options through your head once more. Law was a medical student, and if he said that surgery was the only way to save your life then it was the only option you had. You were scared but now filled with a new determination.

You turned to Law and nodded, agreeing to the surgery. He sighed, relieved that you had made the right call.

“Trafalgar,” You called out, quickly regaining his attention. You smiled weakly but with gratitude, “Thank you. If it wasn’t for you I would have died.”

Law’s chest stung but his impassive expression did not betray him. He was the one that truly landed you in the hospital, you must have been aware of that. He was the end cause for your blood vessel to tear and bleed around your stomach, not your harassers, and yet you were thanking him for saving your life. He didn’t do anything but bring you to the hospital and managing to convince you to undergo the necessary surgery, anyone could have done that.

He would always carry this guilt, the guilt of cause this, throwing you into a world of pain and misery. He thought back to the previous events; the school newspaper, your bold announcement during lunch, and the harassment. Maybe if he wasn’t such an ass to you this wouldn’t have happened. This must have been what was known as the butterfly effect.

“Of course, Shorty – ya. I wouldn’t let my English partner just drop dead and leave me to do all the work.” He teased playfully, a cocky smirk pulling at his lips. You mustered a weak chuckle, rolling your eyes at the expected, Law – ish reply.

“Yeah, that would be a dick move,” You smile softly, “But still, thank you. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me, I won’t forget this.” You paused, you’re smiling widening, “You know, Law, you’re not as bad as I thought. . . You’re an alright guy.”

The medical student paused, taking in your additional sentence. He said nothing towards it, nor did his expression convey any of his internal emotions. His smirk had fallen as well, and you could sense he was taken aback by your heartfelt words. Law was unsure of how to respond, so he stayed silent. It was then your ‘savior’ scoffed a bit as he fell back into his seat, waving his hand in a dismissive way.

“Whatever you say, Shorty – ya, whatever you say.” Law paused, glancing towards the door, you following his gaze. The doctors had re – entered the room. They questioned on your decision, to which you agreed with the surgery. To say the least they were quite content, then swiftly returned to their serious, professional composures. They requested Law to wait in the waiting room near the operating or surgery unit, to which he complied to smoothly.

Law stood up from the chair and made his way to the door. However, the ravenette paused, his hand encased around the door knob as his twisted his head back, looking over his shoulder towards you, smirking. He said one more thing before he left, wanting to say something to you before he left you.

    “I’ll see you later, [Y/N] – ya.”

He would not be able to stay long,
No, don't leave me :(

Oh, wow. Abdominal surgery. This is serious D:

Law felt horrible for what he had done even if it was an accident.
Well, I honestly think it was a matter of time, I think is good that he was there when it happened. He should have been more gentle, yes, but I don't think he did wrong, I think I was lucky...

“Thank you. If it wasn’t for you I would have died.”
You saved a life for the first time, Law ^-^ The first of many lives, I'm sure :)
This is so sweet, I'm melting.
